As you may or may not know I took a class a couple of weeks ago.  I went down to San Diego and took an amazing class on writing Comics at Comics Experience  http://www.comicsexperience.com/.

The main instructor is named Andy Schmidt and he is a highly experienced Comic Book industry professional.  Andy has a long and really cool resume including working as an editor at Marvel. Check out the link above for more info.  He currently editing Transformers and GI Joe.

I am a huge fan of Comics.  Huge – I can’t tell you how huge – in fact the real reason I wanted to be the Magic PTO in San Diego was to get a chance to do Magic at the San Diego Comic Con (story there for another day).

Anyway – if you want to learn about Comics, derive more joy reading Comics, understand the field better (fairly important for me) or to break into Comics as a writer – then this is the class for you.

I learned tons about Comics but the best thing was Andy’s frame on how to become a professional.  I really think its the best frame I have ever heard on how to break into any profession.  I’m going to paraphrase it (with his permission) next week.

The class is structured like a writing group. He teaches a lesson and then the students share their write up with the entire class – great way to learn. The end product of the 5 session class is a short 5 page comic. Mine needs help – but I learned so much and am still working in it. Hopefully it will be ready to publish someday as I would kill to be a comic writer.
