  1. No EDH/Commander Deck events?

Please encourage and support Commander, especially friendly games.

Last year Saturday we kept getting bumped out of our seats while trying to play EDH matches in the large MtG room.

  2. The problem in prior years is that space has been pretty limited at Emerald City. They have really expanded the space so I don’t expect to be out of room.

The other issue is finding a good way to run commander at conventions. We have tried to have a competitive event which didn’t go that well and we have tried a casual league that thought worked fine. However the casual league players wanted to have a playoff and prizes – which bring us back to a competitive event.

The problem really is that commander is drawing two very different types of players. There are commander players who are just playing for fun and have really creative decks and then we have highly competitive players who want to win more than show creativity. The “creative” players complain that the competitive players don’t understand the spirit of commander and then we have a hassle.

The other issue is that it’s hard to make the “creative” players happy if prizes are awarded based on win loss and the competitive players really don’t like awarding prizes based on anything else.

I’m open to running commander – but I need some input on what the players really want.

    • I like the optional rules provided by the original website, The Democratic Victory:

“An organizer who desires a tournament which better approximates normal commander games should reward players for some balance of winning and social play.
One way to achieve this is:

When the game is over, each player votes for an opponent whose play they enjoyed most.
Award two points for being the last player alive, and one point for each vote
Prizes can be given out by points awarded.”

This makes skill-less victories less likely to receive votes, and anti-social gameplay less likely to be rewarded. Also, it keeps the ultra-competitive (unfun people) from even entering. One of the local people only has decks that result in him playing solo magic for 20 minutes until his victory condition is finally revealed. Won’t be rewarded in a Democratic Victory setting.

Kind of like Survivor, where the person who wants the money has to maintain a bond with those they vote off or suffer the penalty.

The only other way I can think of is to have a social victory tournament and an all-about-winning tournament. Players can only enter one of the other.

  3. I think the Democratic Victory would be a good way to reward and encourage winners while also keeping the gameplay as fun as possible, as long as there are (of course) multiplayer pods. Or maybe reward other types of stats besides last person standing, like most damage dealt, most life gained, most creatures played, something like that. More “fun” categories that can garner rewards and recognition as well.
IDK, I mean, it would be nice to see some organized EDH events with support from the organizers, and possibly even prizes, but I’m planning on going to play EDH regardless. Anything besides casual pickup games is a bonus, I guess.

[Also, on a side note, the formatting on this page is kind of awful; it's shrunk to a weird column size and cuts off words in both Chrome (my default) and Firefox. I don't even have IE installed, so no idea how it looks there, but it does make reading event details a bit more difficult.]

  4. I need to get everything finalized for the Grand Prix and then I will be able to focus on Emerald City. There should be some way to make EDH players happy.

But right now I have a million little details on the GP that I have to take care of.
